The Pros and Cons of Caffeine

body mind emotion Sep 12, 2023
Are you a coffee or tea drinker?

Do you drink either everyday?

More than one, or are you that person who always has a coffee in hand or at your desk?

Do you ever consider the fact that caffeine is highly addictive and that you may also be addicted?

Do you care?
If not take a read below as you may change your mind.

Lots of questions I know, and drinking these beverages, and the many variations is a widely accepted practice, even around the world.  There is nothing like a cappuccino when in Italy!

Speaking of Italy, what really took me by surprise when we were there many moons ago, is that there were no "to go" orders.  You stopped, sat or stood and drank your cappuccino and enjoyed every last drop.  So different than the lifestyle we were used to at home, where it is rush rush rush, do more, have more, work more... then at least for me I found caffeine became a necessary part of my life to be able to accomplish all the things I wanted too.

Tips for Getting Back to Routine

mind and body Aug 23, 2023

Getting back to routine can be challenging, but it's essential for productivity and overall well-being.  It's a huge part of self-care as you schedule it into your life.

It's back to school time, indicating it's time to get back to routine, summer is just about over, and it's time to focus.

When thinking about autumn, do you ever get that inkling that aaaahhh fall is about to arrive, and it's time to get back to routine, and maybe even start something new?  It always reminds me of the feelings I had as a teenager, going back to high school, and anxiety, the excitement, the smell of fall in the air, the crunching of leaves...  time to get life on track.

Not sure where to start? You're not alone.  Here are 10 tips to help you get back on track, or on track for the first time.

1  Start Small - We have all tried something where you jump in with both feet, only to find yourself drifting away from that thing within a few months or even weeks.  Be sure to begin with a few managa...

Dealing with the HOT HOT summer

body Jul 19, 2023

With the planet heating up, so are we!  Many places are hitting temperatures and breaking records.  The sad part is, this is our new norm, so we need to learn to cope accordingly.  This is a very important part of our self-care.

Tips on staying cool during our hot summer days:
  • Stay Hydrated - drink plenty of water and or eat hydrating food like watermelon, cucumber, and citrus fruits.  In fact add a slice or two of cucumber to your water.  It then becomes what some call "living water" and helps you better absorb the water your drinking leading to better hydration.
  • Become a Shade Seeker when outdoors, and avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10am and 4pm.  When walking I stick to the shady side of the street.
  • Perform outdoor activities in the morning before it heats up.  We make sure we get Penelope our dog out and back typically before 10am.  After that it's just to dangerous.
  • Air Conditioning - stay indoors in air-conditioned places as much as...

Feeling Stressed? Try this...

mind and emotion Jul 09, 2023

Feeling stressed and can't seem to find a remedy?

Have you ever tried or even heard of Lemon Balm?

First of all what is Lemon balm, and where can you get it?

Lemon balm is a herbaceous perennial plant from the mint family.  It is native to Mediterranean region and is widely cultivated around the world for its aromatic leaves and medicinal properties.

The leaves of lemon balm are primarily used for their medicinal and culinary purposes, such as in making herbal teas, infusions, tinctures, and extracts.

Now regarding tinctures, many are preserved in alcohol, but common sense dictates (as suggested by Anthony William and I agree) that we could be harming our liver and making it process that, instead of gaining all the goodness from the Lemon balm.  Our livers become drunk with alcohol so is it really going to give us the best bang for our buck?  Would you hire a drunk to deliver your nutrients, or would you think they were probably not capable of doing the job as good a...

Mind Care - When is it time to reach out for support?

mind Feb 12, 2023

As I have been creating content for the self-care membership, it reminded me of the importance of "mind care" for our mental health.  You see in the membership I focus on all parts of us, meaning, the Physical, Mental, Emotional and Spiritual. If we can maintain those four areas, we have a better chance at achieving balance in our life as we care for ourselves beyond the physical.

But first what do I mean by "mind care" and "mental health"?

When I was a kid (with transparency I'm mid-50's now) the term "mental health" was not used in my circle anyway, it was "mental illness" which through my limited paradigm back then, meant something was seriously wrong.  I really did not know anyone who experienced it, so had no idea of what it meant.  In fact the term scared me, as I figured it meant someone would be locked up or put onto some serious medication.  Aaaahhh ignorance...

Let's zoom ahead to present day where the term "mental health" is used frequently, and the definition seems to b...

The Art of Giving and Receiving

The Art of Giving and Receiving

You know I used to think it was kind of a funny expression "The Art...", why on earth would anyone call it an art?  Don't you just give and receive?  Well let me share an epiphany with you that I recently had and why I now believe it is an art.

Growing up I was raised in a family where we followed my Mom's wishes of the Jehovah Witness, and did not participate in any holidays, Christmas, Birthdays, Easter, Halloween... all of them except for two occasions, a Wedding or Anniversary, then it was ok to give or receive gifts.  Other than that there was no gift giving going on.  So if you never married, you were SOL (sooo outta luck)!  My gift giving and receiving "skills" were zero to none.

Now I'm not telling you this from a place of a victimhood as an adult, as it was what it was, however as a child I would say I felt like a victim because why was it every other kid got gifts, but I was not allowed to receive gifts?  Imagine what that does to a kids s...

A tasty treat to warm the belly on a cold day.

body mind emotion Nov 08, 2022

Due to the frigid temperatures we are having I thought why not feed the soul with a yummy and nutritious treat.

As some of you know we follow Anthony William, the Medical Medium, not because he's a medium, but because what he says makes sense. We have tried out many of his suggestions, including celery juice every morning, cutting out "troublemaker" foods etc. like caffeine, and just approaching our 8th, 9 day liver cleanse mid-November.

We do it because of the wonderful results we get, and both Darren and I are healthier now than before we followed him, that's almost 3 years ago now.  In fact I have reduced my BP meds from 3 pills, down to .5 of one pill!  Now those are true results based on lifestyle changes, namely what we eat, and through cleansing our bodies.

The great news is that we have tried many of his recipes and found great substitutes for things like dairy (yeah I hear you, I never thought we would give that up, but here we are and I know I am not stuffed up all the ti...

One good deed inspires another!

One good deed inspires another!

While out for our daily walk at the dog park and to the river, (self-care for all of us right) I noticed a man who we see most days, out with his dog going at a snail pace, with a bag in his hand.

We stopped to say hello, and exchange treats dog to dog, and I asked what he was doing.

"Just picking up garbage to keep our beautiful trails and park beautiful this nice.  Imagine if every person did this?"

Well it hit me like a ton of bricks. He was right!  Why do I walk past garbage, because it's not mine?  Yeah admittingly so, the underlying thought being, people should be responsible for themselves, why should I pick up after the irresponsible, or as Dr. Stephen Covey says "irr-response-able.

I had to ask myself, am I able?  You bet I am, so why do I walk past others garbage?  What is my true excuse, is it pride, to prove a point, to wait for those responsible to come back and pick up their mess?  As if that is going to happen, so ins...

"Gratitude is the Best Weapon for Negativity."

mind and emotion Aug 09, 2022
Do you ever have those days where most of your thoughts are negative?  Do you even notice or is it other peoples reactions to you that snap you out of it and into awareness?

The question then becomes, what can you do about it?

Having a discussion with a good friend Jo recently, and she said "Gratitude is the best weapon for negativity."

It stopped me in my tracks as I never thought of gratitude as a weapon, but when it comes to negativity, perhaps that is exactly what we need.

The key is first being aware of your negative state, then try to change what you are thinking, which may not always be easy.  So what more can we do?

One option is to start repeating an affirmation to yourself and really listen to what you're saying (can be silently to self),  and see how your mindset changes.  I personally use "I'm sorry. Please forgive me.  I love you.  Thank you."  Basically I'm acknowledging my "mood" to the Universe and being reminded there is something bigger.  But ...

Addicted to your phone? I think I am...

mind and emotion Jul 11, 2022

Addiction, a big word with a big meaning.

1a compulsive, chronic, physiological or psychological need for a habit-forming substance, behavior, or activity having harmful physical, psychological, or social effects and typically causing well-defined symptoms (such as anxiety, irritability, tremors, or nausea) upon withdrawal or abstinence
2a strong inclination to do, use, or indulge in something repeatedly

Of course for many of use, myself included when we think of the word addiction, substance abuse comes to mind.  But as I was thinking about what to write about his month, I started to realize that perhaps I have an addiction to my phone.

While watching a series, I noticed I would grab my phone during slow scenes to check FB, IG, my email, Noom, SnapChat  and whatever other distractions I have on my phone.

Then I actually went out to run a few errands and thought I left my phone at home.  The adrenalin ran t...
