Managing Holiday Stress
It's that time of year when the pressure is on. Holiday shopping starts earlier now more than ever, and if you hope to find what you are looking for, you better get shopping now!
Then there is the celebrations to think about, who's hosting Christmas this year, what parties will you go to? Will you go to each one you're invited too no matter how busy you are?
Then there is the expense, especially in this economy, is it wise to spend much? Can you get through the holidays without accumulating debt? The list goes on and on, so the question is, how can we manage all this added stress, and actually enjoy the festivities? Here are some suggestions, and I would also suggest just doing a few if all this is new to you.
1. Set Realistic Expectations
- Avoid striving for a “perfect” holiday. Focus on what you truly enjoy, and let go of overly high expectations. It’s okay if not everything goes according to plan!
2. Plan and Prioritize
- Make a list of the most important holiday tasks and events. Prioritize them and try to let go of tasks that aren’t essential, so you can focus on what truly matters.
3. Take Breaks
- Make sure to take small breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just for a few minutes of deep breathing or stepping outside.
4. Create a Budget
- Financial strain can add to holiday stress. Set a budget that you’re comfortable with, and try sticking to it. Focus on thoughtful gestures instead of big expenses. Homemade gifts like baking, or canning make great personal gifts!
5. Practice Gratitude
- Take a few moments each day to reflect on what you’re grateful for. Writing down a few things you appreciate can lift your mood and help keep holiday stress in perspective.

6. Get Plenty of Rest & Eat Healthy
- Holiday activities can be exhausting, making good sleep crucial. Try to stick to a regular sleep schedule and avoid caffeine or electronics right before bed to ensure restful sleep. Be sure to eat healthy to give your body the energy it needs.
7. Be Active
- Even a short walk can help reduce stress and clear your mind. Incorporate movement into your routine to keep up your energy and improve your mood.
8. Set Boundaries
- Say “no” when you need to. It’s okay to turn down invitations or requests if they feel overwhelming. Setting boundaries can help you enjoy the things you do choose to participate in.
9. Practice Mindfulness
- Engage in mindfulness practices, like meditation or deep breathing exercises, to stay centered. Apps like Calm or Headspace can be helpful if you’re new to this.
10. Ask for Help
- Don’t hesitate to delegate tasks or ask family members to pitch in. Teamwork can lighten your load and make holiday preparations a shared experience.
By simplifying and focusing on what truly brings you joy, you can enjoy a more peaceful and stress-free holiday season. It will be worth the effort it takes to follow some of the above.
Remember also, don't add more stress to yourself by thinking you have to do it all, just pick a few things from the list above. that suit you, and see how much better you feel for doing so.
